the city talks back

Athens Tessellation: mapping home stories during the lockdown

Confinement and social distancing were considered by national authorities as an effective way to get this extraordinary global health crisis under control. In this context, “home” appears as a shelter of relative security, a place of warmth and peace and as a substitute for increasingly inaccessible public spaces. But which homes?

Curing the Limbo is an integration program for refugees of the City of Athens who have received asylum in Greece. While access to affordable housing is one of its key pillars, an increased number of houses in Athens are turning into assets due to current changes in the market. Architects Stefania Gyftopoulou and Mara Petra are interested in how this process can be and/or is being reversed through practices of home making.

Working closely with Curing the Limbo audio-visual workshop tutors and participants, the project team explores “home” as a multidimensional concept so as to include refugee participants living under diverse conditions. Athens Tessellation explores the city during the lockdown with a focus on the notion of home via the media of photography, video and music. Twelve individuals tell their stories separately and collectively from different places in Athens: their own apartments, shared flats to afford the rent, shared rooms in containers within camps, streets and public buildings.

The contributors – who are of different nationalities and ethnicities – open the doors to their homes, allowing us to engage with stories that lie hidden within Athenian apartments and neighbourhoods.  The project team mapped these works into narrative routes across the city following specific themes: Spirituality, Creative Boredom, Memory, Introspection, Inside Out and Unrequited Love. When brought together, the story of Athens is told anew through familiar and everyday experiences of the lockdown.

Passing Time, Nancy Ngoyol

My name is Nancy and I am from Kinshasa, Congo.

Confinement Total, Kikebula Christian

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kikebula Christian, and I’m a student in Limbo (Serafeio). My short video was made in the end to show what happened during the time of Confinement, inside the house as well as outside. We saw that the feeling and the atmosphere was not like this before. Despite all this we give glory to God for the life he gives us and we expect the best after this period.

Creep

Alireza Babaie

Hey there, I am Alireza. I am an electronic music producer and techno DJ and it has been a while since I started working with Curing the Limbo team. It is my pleasure to present a little bit of our art to you lovely audience!

Sourena Dinashi

I am Sourena Dinashi and I love singing. I have nice feelings about every music we sang with my dear friends. I believe music is one of the best ways to share your feelings, thoughts and moments.

I did not have any experience working with a group of people as a singer before, so singing an old Persian track like Sultane Ghalbha was a bit challenging during quarantine time. But with getting advice from my dear teacher Christos and my dear friend Shokufa, I understood that everything is possible in any situation by working hard. Singing Creep and Aisha, was really new for me. Everyone contributed to this fine result and I am proud of myself to be part of those nice moments.

Karimi Arab Ebrahim

I am Karimi Arab. I speak Arabic, Persian and English.

Christian Nzouathom Junia

I am Christian Nzouathom Junia and I come from Cameroon.

From bedroom to balcony, Mohamed Tayeb

I come from Syria. I have been in Athens for one year and half. I like music, theater, travel and photography. I learned it for six months, I got how to use the camera and how take a great photo. Since lockdown I got some photos and I would like to share it with all, thanks you all wish you all the best and good health

I started to discover my home in detail starting from under my bed and up to the roof.

Also in the bedroom when I always sit with my laptop, watching movies, also learning and writing with my pen. I open the window to see the empty street which is occupied by sweet cats that play freely without carrying humans or cars.

Cars that stayed calm after long long journeys.

I set in my balcony with my tea, watching nothing just a kind of change.

See the lemon tree in front of me also I took from it lemon to make delicious salad that I learned since this period.

Home Memories, Ahmad Askaryzadeh

Home helps me to think, Kambiz Isakhani

Home helps me to think

Actually, I don’t have a feeling. I take photos like a tourist. Maybe I have a feeling when I shoot but I can’t correctly share it. I’m alone away from my family. Being at home helps me a lot to think about my family.

Home is where the time passes by, Yousef Abdulrahim

I’m Yousef, I am 22 years old living in Athens. I’m a drawing artist. I started doing art at 15 years of age when I drew for the first time. My father was an artist, photographer and agricultural engineer. I tried to learn something from him. I took pictures sometimes with his cameras. Then after 15 years when I came to Athens I worked as an artist, and I thought that if I start to develop my skills by taking pictures with a camera, it would be a great thing so I joined in the photography class in Curing the limbo Program…That is my story, hope you enjoyed by reading….

Home is where the time passes by

Staying at home was a difficult time, time passes slowly, every day when I light my cigarette, I meditate the time that passes and I look at the smoke from the cigarette…the time was very slow, our feelings were cold, and I began to lose part of the emotions inside me…The last days, someone advised me to visit the church and take pictures for my project and also get know about the amazing art inside the church. They were lovely days there. When I finished drawing, I took a picture of the drawing, but I felt that the sharpener was calling me, and I felt that I could take a nice shot of it.

I thought about sharing these photos from inside my daily life during quarantine.

Spiritual, Nancy Ngoyol

My name is Nancy and I am from Kinshasa, Congo. I loved singing for God since I was a child. I keep singing and asking from God to guide me into this foreign land.
